Spirits of fire and water

Another backstory picture (I can't draw anything without coming up with a story for it, and vice versa)

In the world there are elemental spirits, whose powers vary by how old they are. The oldest for say, water, govern massive forces like typhoons, tidal waves, and maelstroms. Lesser ones do stuff like tides, rainstorms, etc

Anyhoo, after a certain amount of time, the spirits accumulate a large amount of destructive energy, which can be released by triggering a natural occurance (sometimes disaster) or by reproducing. The spirit has to find another of the opposite element (fire/water, earth/air, light/dark) while they are asleep, and do the right stuff
Water spirits sleep fairly often. However, when spirits sleep, they hide in a body of their element, making them difficult to find. The only way you can find a water spirit when they are sleeping is to look for ripples on the surface of a body of water, accompanied by a quiet sighing (they sigh in their sleep....very lovely). This water spirit has been found by a particularly angsty fire spirit, both of them fairly old and powerful.
Now, when the spirit that has been found awakens after their sleep (they don't wake up during the doing ) they become generally enraged and unleash one of their calamities. This spirit governs over mountain rivers and lakes, so she'll probably cause several severe mudslides and break a dam or two when she wakes up. The fire spirit governs an underground lava pool, and the consensus among the fire spirits is that he needs to not let that one explode for a very long time, or human kind is going to be in serious trouble (you may have heard of the supervolcano under yosemite national park? yeah)
Now, you may be wondering why we don't have these disasters more often, and the fact is that older spirits tend to hide better, being harder to find, or just know how to release destructive energies in smaller ways. Not too complicated....
